Acting Governor Cruz discusses buildup with visiting members of Congress

August 10, 2009

Acting Governor Michael W. Cruz, M.D., today met with a visiting congressional delegation that arrived in Guam this afternoon. The delegation is led by Congressman Nick Rahall of West Virginia, who is chairman of the House Committee on Natural Resources and has oversight of the insular areas.

“I stressed to them the need to ensure that the buildup must not be exclusively beneficial for the military personnel, dependents and support staff coming to Guam, but must also improve the quality of life for the 170,000 residents already living here,” said Acting Governor Cruz. “I highlighted the fact that the relocation of Marines to Guam was a national decision, and its success requires a national commitment of support.”

Additional members of the delegation include Congressman Eni Faleomavaega of American Samoa, Congressman Henry Brown of South Carolina, Congresswoman Donna Christensen of the Virgin Islands, Congressman Gregorio Sablan of the CNMI and Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo of Guam.

“This was a great opportunity to discuss regional issues with respected members of Congress,” said Acting Governor Cruz. “As chairman, I believe that it is critical that Congressman Rahall and his committee realize that our region has an abundance of natural resources, and they must do what they can to preserve and protect our environment as the buildup takes place.”

All three Guam educational institutions to benefit in capital projects from use of State Fiscal Stabilization Funds

August 6, 2009

Governor Felix P. Camacho has submitted the application to the U.S. Department of Education (U.S. DOE) for initial funding under the State Fiscal Stabilization Fund program (SFSF). The SFSF is a component of expanded education and public service funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) signed by President Barack Obama in February.

“The funding for our education system under this act is historic,” said Governor Camacho. “This is an opportunity to completely transform the learning environments in our elementary and secondary schools, community college and university for the new century.”

Guam’s portion of the SFSF is $107,983,137. The ARRA mandated $268 million to the U.S. insular territories. Under the phased program, the Guam Department of Education (GDOE), Guam Community College (GCC) and the University of Guam (UOG) would collectively receive 67 percent of the total amount, or $72.3 million, for 2009 with the remaining 33 percent, or $35.6 million, to be spent in 2010.

A STATEMENT FROM THE ACTING GOVERNOR OF GUAM
August 1, 2009

“Governor Felix P. Camacho and I are saddened by the passing of former Philippine President Corazon Aquino. Her leadership, determination, and perseverance coupled with a love for her country and its citizens, are remarkable stories that will be shared with future generations.

Her exceptional life and rise to leadership inspired many to not only hope for, but work toward a better society. She successfully led her country in ousting a long-standing dictatorship; the 'People Power' revolution is viewed by many as a modern-day symbol of democracy.

Our families join our Filipino brothers and sisters on Guam and the millions around the world in offering our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of President Aquino during their time of grief.”
