Governor chooses from nominees presented by Stakeholders Committee

December 14, 2008

Governor Felix P. Camacho has appointed Dr. Lee Meadows and Salvatore Giovanni T. "Bunny" Sgambelluri to the Guam Education Policy Board.

Dr. Meadows will fill the vacant seat from the Luchan district.  Mr. Sgambelluri, the former superintendent of the Guam Public School System, will represent the Kattan district.

"I want to thank everyone involved in the selection process for helping me to appoint members who will represent the best interests of our people," Governor Camacho said.  "There is so much work to be done and I look forward to working with Dr. Meadows, Mr. Sgambelluri, the other members of the Board, and GPSS in providing the best education to our children."

Dr. Meadows and Mr. Sgambelluri were nominated to the Governor from a pool of applicants from the respective districts.  These applicants were either recommended or submitted their interest to the Governor's Office.  A committee of community stakeholders reviewed and discussed the credentials of all interested individuals.  Two choices for each district were then given to the Governor for his final selection.   The Governor initiated the search  following the certification of results from the 2008 General Election when vacancies in the Kattan and Luchan districts became apparent.

"We wanted the community involved in the selection of these board members," Governor Camacho said.

Dr. Meadows is a pediatrician who also holds a teaching degree. He is a member of the Head Start Board and has told the Governor he wants to focus on school policy that will make a difference in student health and wellness programs.

Mr. Sgambelluri served briefly as the education superintendent before resigning due to health reasons as advised by his physician. He brings to the board more than 35 years of professional experience in the academic and business communities.

"These two gentlemen have two distinct backgrounds and areas of expertise that will enrich the board and bring added perspective to its policy-making process," Governor Camacho said.  "I have full confidence they will help to improve public education for our island's children."

The Stakeholders Committee included:

·      First Lady Joann Camacho, who has been an education advocate since her husband's tenure as Governor began.  The First Lady worked hard to build partnerships, which resulted in the Bookmobile's regular schedule through villages, improving and encouraging literacy. She also was instrumental in the School Recovery Task Force and Project ABC and has led or been involved in several efforts to improve public education.

·      Senator Frank Ishizaki

·      Dr. Nerissa Bretania-Shafer, who was represented by Lourdes San Nicolas and Mike Meno of the principals' management team at GPSS.
