FY08 Grant to fund port, Northern Transfer Station and Guam EPA Projects
January 15, 2008
Governor Felix P. Camacho this past weekend secured $4.1 million in FY 2008 Capital Improvement Project Grant Program funding from the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI). The baseline amount for Guam CIPs under the 11-year competitive DOI Grant Program only is $3.3 million. The Governor returned to Guam with the news.
Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Interior David Cohen told the Governor that Guam will get the award during Cohen's last meeting with the Governor in Cohen's position as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Interior. Cohen is leaving DOI and will continue a career in the private sector.
"We are excited that the improved efforts of our agencies have given us the opportunity to increase funding above the baseline amount," Governor Camacho said. "This speaks highly of the hard work and diligence of the government's employees. This is just the beginning of our efforts to build the capacity we need and sustain economic growth for the benefit of all our people."
The funds in the program are competitive. Securing money above baseline levels means U.S. DOI has recognized the government of Guam is prioritizing and maximizing funds to improve our community through critical projects.
For 2008, $1.3 million will be utilized by the Department of Public Works for the design of a Northern Transfer Station. The transfer station will further the implementation of the Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan and improve efforts to comply with the federal Consent Decree and better manage Guam's solid waste.
Two million dollars also is awarded to the Port Authority of Guam. The Guam Environmental Protection Agency is awarded $809,000 for the design and construction of a new Guam EPA Building.
"These projects are critical to the upcoming Guam buildup," Governor Camacho said. "We will continue working with DOI and Deputy Assistant Secretary Cohen's successor in securing the funding to improve the quality of life of our residents and to support U.S. forces in Guam."
