The Office of the Governor is pleased to announce that it has received a grant for $661,510 for its fiscal year 2009 Recovery Act S.T.O.P. (Services Training Officers Prosecutors) Violence Against Women Formula Grant Program from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women (OVW).
Grant funds will be used to hire and retain criminal justice and victim services personnel who respond to violent crimes against women. This will, in turn, develop and strengthen effective law enforcement, prosecution strategies, and victim services for such cases.
“These funds are important in ensuring that Guam agencies can provide the services and resources that victimized women need,” Governor Felix P. Camacho said. “As one recent tragedy illustrated, this is a real need in our community that can prevent these traumatic and sometimes deadly crimes.”
The OVW encourages states and territories to target Recovery Act funding to support strategies that improve response to domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking, while at the same time creating and preserving jobs and promoting economic growth.
Potential beneficiaries of grant funds include criminal justice agencies – the Guam Police Department, Office of the Attorney General, Superior Court of Guam, or Department of Corrections – and non-governmental organizations that provide victim services.
