HHS-Sponsored H1N1 Influenza Summit comes on the heels of recent announcement of confirmed H1N1 cases in Guam
July 9, 2009
Governor Felix P. Camacho today announced a team of government of Guam officials are in Bethesda, Md., to attend an H1N1 Influenza Summit being hosted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on Thursday, July 9, 2009.
Kathleen Sebelius, HHS secretary; Janet Napolitano, U.S. Homeland Security secretary; and Arne Duncan, U.S. Department of Education secretary, will lead the one-day summit focusing on flu season school preparedness, vaccination planning and H1N1 risk communications, and funding support for state, tribal and territorial partners.
“This summit will help us learn from one another how to provide the best immediate care for those affected by H1N1 and other communicable diseases,” said Governor Camacho. “In light of our island’s confirmed H1N1 cases, it is critical that we work together and have the best information to equip our first responders to appropriately mitigate impacts and protect the health of our community in the event of an outbreak.”
Shawn Gumataotao, the governor’s deputy chief of staff; Doris Crisostomo, government of Guam health policy advisor; and Josie O’Mallan, Department of Public Health chief public health officer, join six governors as well as summit participants from across the country to discuss the latest planning efforts for the upcoming flu season.
Panel discussions will include vaccine distribution, worker protection, roles of the public and private sectors in the event of an outbreak, and health care system surge and capacity.
