Acting Governor Michael W. Cruz, M.D., announced today that, effective in fiscal year 2010, the Government of Guam will receive $2.6 million more annually in Compact Impact grant funding. The increase brings the annual funding amount from $14.2 million received in years past to $16.8 million.

Thomas Bassanich, Budget and Grants Management Division director of the Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs, notified Governor Felix P. Camacho of the increase in a letter stating that funding among eligible insular areas was recalculated this year based on population data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

“This is great news for Guam, and I commend the U.S. Department of the Interior for recognizing the need to increase Compact Impact grant funding,” said Acting Governor Cruz. “We look forward to using the additional $2.6 million to fund critical projects that will help the government better serve our entire community.”

As requested by the Office of Insular Affairs, the government of Guam will submit a proposal no later than Oct. 1, 2009, detailing the projects to be funded by the grant. Compact Impact funds can only be used for health, educational, social or public safety, or infrastructure-related services specifically affected by qualified non-immigrants as required under Section 104(e)(3) of Public Law 108-188.
