Governor Felix P. Camacho arrived on Tuesday in Honolulu to attend the Pacific Basin Development Council’s (PBDC) annual meeting. Gov. Camacho serves as president of the council’s board.

“The PBDC expects to be very busy over the next year,” said Gov. Camacho. “With the expansion of the military in the Western Pacific and renewable energy at the forefront of economic and environmental concern, it is critical that we as leaders come together to discuss these mutual issues.”

Among items to be discussed at the annual meeting are regional maritime security concerns and management strategies for Centers of Excellence – teams that promote collaboration, application of best practices, and support regarding a single issue.

Also in attendance are board members Benigno Fitial, governor of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands; Togiola Tulafono, governor of the American Samoa; and Linda Lingle, governor of Hawaii. The meeting will conclude Thursday, and Gov. Camacho will return to Guam the same day.

The council is a non-profit organization developed in 1980 by the governors of Guam, the CNMI, American Samoa, and Hawaii to increase development and diversification of the islands’ economies. In addition to the annual meeting, the PBDC also holds a winter meeting each year.
