August 23, 2009 The Government of Guam has been awarded $1 million in Capital Improvement Project funds. This money will be used for preliminary engineering and environmental studies for the modernization of the Jose D. Leon Guerrero Commercial Port facilities. The Port’s projects were outlined in a proposal and scope of work submitted by the government of Guam to the U.S. Department of Interior on August 11, 2009. The grant funding was made available through the execution of an amended agreement between the Office of Insular Affairs and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration. Lt. Governor Michael W. Cruz, M.D, who was Acting Governor at the time, signed the grant’s notification of acceptance on August 21, 2009. “Our administration will continue to make the decisions that grow Guam’s future and help our people prosper,” said Lt. Governor Cruz. “In anticipation of the Guam Buildup, we remain committed to the Port’s modernization plan which we believe will be vital to meeting the needs of our growing community.”
