Web Site Advisory April 3, 2008

Our web host will be performing routine maintenance on the MySql server that contains our data. The following message was provided by our host:

MySQL Maintenance Scheduled for Tonight

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve MySQL performance, we will be adding new hardware and re-allocating the load on our MySQL servers between 12:00am and 5:00am EDT on Thursday, April 3, 2008. During this five-hour maintenance window, there may be periods of time when your database is temporarily inaccessible, making the database-driven pieces of your Web site temporarily unavailable to your visitors. (You should be able to connect to your database(s) as normal for most of this maintenance window, but you may experience intermittent connectivity issues between midnight and 5:00am EDT.)

We have scheduled this maintenance for a time when traffic to most customers' sites is typically at its lowest. Still, we apologize for any inconvenience, and we expect that the work we're doing will help improve your site's performance.

Governor Secures Federal Funds from USDA for Food Stamp Program PDF Print E-mail
April 3, 2008

Previously withheld funding for administrative costs in the local food stamp program will not be suspended following a successful appeal by Governor Felix P. Camacho.

The Unites States Department of Agriculture – Food and Nutrition Service (USDA FNS) also will provide an additional $100,000 to the program on top of the $73,221 to be released to the Guam Department of Public Health and Social Services, Bureau of Economic Security (Food Stamp and Welfare Office) this week.

"I am grateful that we were given immediate attention and our programs are no longer threatened," Governor Camacho said.

USDA FNS was threatening to suspend $73,221 in federal funds to cover administrative costs for Guam DPHSS Bureau of Economic Security employees due to concerns regarding timeliness of food stamp application processing.  The funding was withheld while this matter was being addressed.

As a result of Governor Camacho's letter to Secretary Ed Schafer, the USDA FNS Region IX received notice from its national office that Guam's appeal was considered timely and funds were not to be suspended.  The additional $100,000 covers the unfunded balance in the second quarter of fiscal year 2008 to the Food Stamp Program for administrative costs.

The DPHSS Bureau of Economic Security is addressing these concerns and is working to achieve same day processing and to have food stamp benefits available the day after application processes are complete.
